Edition 2025: the theme of Memory

Each year, the show focuses on a particular theme that runs through all the exhibitions and meetings. For 2025, we have chosen the theme of Memory. This theme invites us to reflect on how memories, both personal and collective, shape our lives and our cultural heritage. Literature, in particular, plays a crucial role in the transmission of memory: books archive our history, our identities, and enable us to delve into the memories of a society or an individual.

As part of Walfer Bicherdeeg 2025, numerous activities will explore this theme. A photographic exhibition by students from the Lycée des Arts et Métiers, for example, will illustrate different visions of memory, continuing an artistic collaboration begun several years ago. Stage readings and musical performances based on the theme of memory are also planned on the show’s outdoor stage. The theme will also be reflected in the stands and conferences, offering visitors the opportunity to discover how the notion of memory inspires creators and authors from Luxembourg and beyond.

Authors in the spotlight and a varied program

The success of the Walfer Bicherdeeg is above all based on the encounter between the public and the authors. The 2025 edition will be no exception, with the presence of a host of writers, illustrators and personalities from the literary world. As every year, the organizers have invited two Luxembourg authors to take up writing residencies, in order to create original works in line with the annual theme. In 2024, for example, poet Ulrike Bail and writer Jeff Schinker delighted audiences with their texts inspired by the Wanderlust theme, in musical readings accompanied by jazz musicians. For 2025, two new authors will in turn propose original literary creations around the theme of Memory, to be performed on stage during the show weekend.

In addition to these performances, the public will be able to meet numerous authors throughout the event. Over twenty writers from Luxembourg and the Greater Region will be presenting their latest works, taking part in book signings and hosting literary discussions. Among them will be award-winning authors and finalists for the Lëtzebuerger Buchpräis (Luxembourg Book Prize) – all the more reason for book lovers to come and discover new talents. In addition, the Maison Dufaing, a charming historic residence, will host intimate readings where tandems or trios of authors will read and discuss their works, offering privileged moments of exchange with the public.

Young readers are not to be outdone: a Books for Kids area dedicated to children’s literature will be held at the Prince Henri Centre, full of color and discoveries. Numerous children’s authors will be offering readings and activities, and creative workshops will be organized to awaken a love of books in the little ones. Local school classes are also actively involved in the festival – a special pedagogical day, inaugurated at the previous edition, enables secondary school pupils to meet book professionals the day before the official opening. This educational dimension further enhances the family-friendly spirit of the Walferdange Book Fair.
